I’m trying to get all possible information regarding Wanda in one place so … it is not possible to skip the applet Easter eggs.
“Easter egg” is small (sometimes not that small) piece of code that the developers intentionally integrate inside an application. It stays hidden until someone activates it by chance/mistake or because he reviewed the code. Gnome Wanda applet has some Easter eggs as well. Here is a list of those I know of. When I dissect the original code I will let you know if there are more or not.
Free the fish
This one will make the Wanda float all around your desktop. This is part of the gnome-panel process so the only way to get rid of the floating fish after releasing it is to kill the gnome-panel. There are two ways I know of that will yield the same result.
Activation sequence 1
- Open the Run Application dialog (Alt + F2)
- Type “free the fish” (do not enter the quotes)
- Press Enter or click Run button
Activation sequence 2
- Right-click your Gnome panel
- Click “About Panels”
- Press the “F” key three times (the speed doesn’t matter)
Deactivation sequence
If you just click the floating fish she will just run away from the screen but just for a while than it will come back again.
As I already mentioned you need to kill the gnome-panel in order to get rid of the floating Wanda.
- Open terminal window
- Type “pkill gnome-panel” (do not enter the quotes)
- Press Enter
Wanda vs. Gegls
This is a small “space invaders” type of game. You need to keep the fish alive from evil gegls fire. 🙂
Activation sequence 2
- Open the Run Application dialog (Alt + F2)
- Type “gegls from outer space” (do not enter the quotes)
- Press Enter or click Run button
- Use Space to shoot the gegls and Left/Right arrow buttons to run away from the gegls fire. Wanda has 3 lives in total.
Deactivation sequence
Just close the game window
First of April Wanda prank
If it is first of April and you see that your Wanda is belly-up DO NOT PANIC … she is just acting dead 🙂
Google “Fools day” 😉
